The latest Merck Animal Health Veterinary Wellbeing Study found that around 75% of veterinary support staff and veterinarians under the age of 45 are experiencing moderate to severe severe burnout. Fortunately, burnout can be prevented and reduced when individuals are given the right tools, resources, and support. Quality veterinary mentorship—support from someone more experienced or a peer—may play a unique role in preventing burnout or helping others who may be experiencing burnout. In this seminar, we will discuss research findings regarding burnout within the veterinary profession including the incidence of burnout and proposed causes. You will learn to recognize the symptoms of burnout in yourself and others as well as some individual and organizational strategies that you can use as a veterinary mentor to reduce and prevent burnout within the veterinary profession.
